Frequently Asked Questions
Will you speak to my school, library or local bookstore?
Yes. Of course. We'd love to come out to your local library, school or bookstore. For event coordination please email Jaleesa Davis at Penguin Random ouse, jaldavis@penguinrandomhouse.com.
So there's three of you? How'd that happen?
Well you know the saying, 'Good things come in threes'. We figured we'd put that into practice. In all seriousness, we are a collaborative bunch. Harold and Craig have been friends since college in Athens, GA. Then they started their own company called SunnyBoy Entertainment. They travel all over the world working on making documentaries and behind the scenes on movies like Superman, Minecraft and Moana. They also have written for TV shows like R.L. Stine's Haunting Hour and Spooksville. When they started working on books they got hooked up with Theo through their editor, Stacey Barney. Theo was already publishing books and running an MFA Program in Brooklyn. Together we feel like an unstoppable force. We're always working on all kinds of ways to tell stories. We've made stories in Virtual Reality, film, television but our favorite medium is books. Most of our ideas start with books and then we try to get them out in the world in all kinds of other ways. It's been almost a decade now that we've been writing as a team. We've been doing so much together for so long that we figured we'd just take on a pen name. Thus Rucker Moses was born.
Where'd you come up with the name Rucker Moses?
The name actually started when we were writing the Kingston series. You'll learn a lot more about him if you read the books but we took the name Rucker from the one and only Black Herman. His birth name is Benjamin Rucker. Black Herman was a legendary magician and all around super interesting character who hung out with some of the most iconic people in NY during the Harlem Renaissance. Thanks Mr. Rucker! Moses we added as a nod to, well, Moses. Everyone knows Moses but what they don't know is that he was steeped in the magical arts in ancient Egypt. So we combined the names of these two legends of magic for our pen name.
What are you up to next?
We are working with Disney and producer Jane Startz to develop Kingston as a film. They bought the rights, scripts are being written and fingers are being crossed. We are also launching Encounter at Owl Rock into the universe this summer. Lastly, we are working on our next book that we can't tell you much about but we'll at least drop some bread crumbs. We've done a book series in NY, one in Atlanta and now we're moving on to the West Coast and the magical town of Altadena, CA. It's a mystery book that has roots in the history and lore surrounding this enclave in the foothills of Los Angeles. It's a place near and dear to our hearts and we can't wait to get it out in the world.
